Intermodal and Rail

Rail-and-truck options through qualified providers, subject to route, equipment and shipment acceptance.

Container truck alongside a double-stack freight train

For suitable lanes, combining rail transport with truck pickup and delivery offers another way to move commercial freight. VEXO Logistics reviews intermodal options through qualified providers according to route coverage, equipment availability and shipment acceptance.

Understand the door to door movement

An intermodal shipment typically travels by truck between the shipping facility and a rail terminal, by rail between terminals, and by truck to the receiver. The freight usually remains in the same intermodal container across those legs, although the agreed service determines the actual handling. Terminal location and local drayage are part of the overall transit plan.

Identify a suitable shipment

Intermodal may suit recurring, longer-distance freight with predictable volume and some scheduling flexibility. Packaged goods must be suitable for the handling and movement involved. Urgent freight, restricted commodities or products requiring specialized environmental controls need a more detailed acceptance review.

Plan packaging and weight carefully

Share packaged dimensions, piece count, weight and loading configuration. Blocking, bracing and weight distribution should meet the selected provider’s requirements for rail transport. Freight that works in a highway trailer is not automatically suitable for an intermodal container or the chosen rail service.

Compare the complete option

Evaluate the total door-to-door price and transit plan, including local truck legs, terminal cutoffs, free time, loading allowances and potential storage or detention. Rail transit is one part of the journey. VEXO can discuss an available intermodal proposal alongside road options where the shipment scope permits.

Common questions

Is intermodal always cheaper than truckload? No. The route, volume, terminal proximity and market conditions determine whether it offers value.

Will my freight be unloaded at each rail terminal? It commonly stays inside the container during transfer between truck and rail. Any planned transfer of the goods should be confirmed in the service scope.

Explore an intermodal option

Send the lane, frequency, dimensions, weight, commodity and delivery flexibility. VEXO will review whether a provider-supported option is available.
